For Nikon Z8 and Z9 users who need to colour match with an ARRI Alexa, want more creative choices for their post workflow, or who are unsatisfied with the standard Nikon 709 LUTs on offer, I have developed a LUT that accurately emulates the ARRI Alexa 709 colour science for N-Log on the Nikon Z8 and Z9.

Along with the emulation LUT, there are 4 creative variation LUTs that come with it packaged as an ARRI LUT 5 Pack.

For the nostalgic among you, I have also developed 6 Film Emulation LUTs that each emulate film stocks from the past.

A lot of Nikon Z8 and Z9 users have reached out asking for a way to more closely match the ARRI Alexa, as well as for a more cinematic starting point than the standard Nikon N-Log conversion. To address this, I decided to develop a LUT that emulates my ARRI Alexa Mini using the same tried-and-tested process I've refined across Sony, Canon, Panasonic, DJI, Blackmagic and RED cameras.

While no camera is perfect, I still consider the Alexa's colour science to be the gold standard for producing natural, accurate and beautiful colour straight out of the box, making it an exceptional foundation to grade from.

Over the course of several days, I shot exposure-matched test footage with my ARRI Alexa Mini and Nikon Z8 side by side. The cameras were tested across a wide range of lighting conditions including direct sunlight, open shade, overcast skies, indoor daylight, mixed lighting and controlled studio environments, all using my trusted X-Rite ColorChecker Classic and X-Rite ColorChecker SG charts.

In total, I captured approximately 80 different scenes. For every setup, I recorded three exposures—two stops under, correct exposure, and two stops over—to build a comprehensive dataset. Using this data, I developed an emulation that closely reproduces the Alexa's colour science, taking into account not only the overall colour response, but also the more subtle characteristics that make the Alexa image so distinctive. These include its non-linear hue responses for rich, complex colours, subtractive colour modelling in relation to luminance and saturation, and its beautifully controlled highlight roll-off and shadow fall-off, all of which contribute to its unmistakably cinematic rendering.

The ‘Film Look’ LUT Pack contains 6 LUTs inspired by real film stocks designed to give your
N-Log Footage the Film Look. The emulations are based on my own research and subjective impressions of the film stocks listed.

What Exactly Are LUTs?

A LUT (Look-Up Table) is a file containing a predefined set of mathematical instructions to transform colors in an image or video. In filmmaking, LUTs are essential for converting flat, low-contrast log footage into a rich, cinematic image. They are the fastest and most consistent way to achieve a professional color grade, but their quality is determined by the precision of their creation.
